note (text)
This compact Book of Hours opens with a calendar containing Saints associated with Flanders and Northern France, including Saints Amandus and Vedastus (February 6, fol. 2r), Saints Remigius and Bavo (October 1, fol. 10r), Saint Eligius (December 1, fol. 12r) and Saint Nicasius (December 14, fol. 12r). Following the calendar, the book contains the Hours of the Cross and the Hours of the Holy Spirit, followed by the Mass of the Virgin, the Hours of the Virgin for the Use of Rome, and the Advent Hours of the Virgin. The Penitential Psalms, Litany, and Prayers are followed by the Office of the Dead. The final sections contain the Obsecro te and O intemerata prayers, the Psalter of Saint Jerome, a Suffrage to Saint Sebastian, and a Mass of the Archangel Raphael for those who travel. A coat-of-arms (azure a siband sinister or, over all a lion rampant sable to sinister), likely belonging to the original owner, is found on fol. 13r. The manuscript contains seventeen full-page miniatures with blank versos, added as singletons but original to the book. Three miniatures were illuminated in the workshop of the Bruges illuminator Guillaume (William) Vrelant (fl. 1449-1481). Vrelant is considered one of the most influential illuminators active in Bruges during the third quarter of the fifteenth century.
