This database is part of the HisTochText project, which has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (grant agreement number 788205). The contents of the database and the website were compiled and designed by Véronique Kremmer, a PhD student in Comparative Indo-European linguistics at EPHE-PSL and member of the HisTochText team.
\n
The aim of the database is to provide researchers and those interested in Buddhist and comparative literature studies with an intuitive tool, facilitating access to the rich contents of the Tocharian corpus.
\n
The HisTochText project ends on March 31st, 2024. The TochStory database thus reflects the state of research at this time, but it will continue to be updated sporadically as new findings in Tocharian narrative texts emerge.
\n
How to search the database?
\n
The database can be searched using the filters provided in the different tabs. These allow users to find the stories by characters, story title or place names. Within each tab, you will find additional criteria to refine your search.
\n
Characters can be searched by name, in standard Sanskrit spelling, or by additional characteristics. These include species (human, animal or supernatural) and gender, as well as an \"additional descriptor\" tag. In this latter category you will find, for instance, names of professions, animal names, aristocratic titles and types of demons. More than one filter can be applied at once, so that you may search for all instances of \"naga kings\", if you wish to do so.
\n
Stories can be searched by the given title, which is either a standard title of a parallel text in Sanskrit or a descriptive title in English, when no other title is available. Every story is also categorized by genre. Additionally, stories can be searched by the main events of the story which have been distilled into a simple sentence (\"story events\"), or by the overall themes of the story, which may be multiple.
\n
Places can be searched by name, in standard Sanskrit spelling, insofar as it is attested in the Tocharian story. In addition to the toponyms, the \"place\" category also records place types such as forests, monasteries and mountains, which often form the backdrop of Buddhist narratives.
\n
Lastly, the \"Browse Manuscripts\" tab allows to view the narrative manuscripts in Tocharian used for the database and the relevant metadata. The TochStory database does not aspire to be a digital repository for manuscript photos and editions, as other more specialized tools already exist. Therefore, the entry for a given manuscript only shows a small portion of the metadata and the summarized contents, and instead links to the digital edition elsewhere: mainly the CEToM project hosted by the University of Vienna.
","dom_id":"cms-content-16"}],"folder":true,"dom_id":"cms-content-15","css":{}}]</detail>
