Red Book Covers –Dust Jackets in Maoist China
Database name:
RedBookCoversMaoistChina
Description:
In Maoist China, state publishers shaped public consciousness to a hitherto unknown degree. Already before the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1st, 1949 did Mao Zedong formulate his vision of how propaganda should work in arts and literature.
Existing research has documented the ambitions of the Chinese Communist Party to do so. Mao's instruction, however, did not only relate to texts but also to images. This project aims at shifting the perspective to another influential medium, that is book covers. No matter if black-and-white or in color these covers allow insights into the aesthetics and political message conveyed to an audience more forcefully and directly than the lengthy texts following the fancy covers.
This database allows searching book covers dating from the period of 1949 to 1978 and to categorize them according to different criteria.
