Description:

BCSF-Rénass (Bureau central sismologique français et Réseau national de surveillance sismique) has been responsible for estimating macroseismic intensities (severity of seismic shocks) for the French territory since 1921. Its archives include all the documents resulting from macroseismic surveys (recording the effects of earthquakes on people, objects, furniture, buildings and the environment) carried out since that date: forms, letters, maps, press articles, macroseismic reports, etc. Between 1921 and 1996, some 1,428 earthquakes were surveyed to estimate macroseismic intensities, mainly by sending paper survey forms to the communes. This represents 29 linear metres of archival documents. All documents prior to 1947 (50 years) are currently freely accessible online in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
