Indian ocean slave trade database

Database name:

IOSTDB

Description:

This digital memorial aims to provide access to the documentation available on slave trade in the Indian Ocean. It includes an inventory on slavery and indenture in the Indian Ocean and a database on slave voyages in the Indian Ocean (especially in the South West Indian Ocean) and on the inland and maritime slave routes. Both maritime cabotage and inland slave routes have not been well documented and little is known about the connections that this trade in human cargo fostered. Caravans with captives arrived at the ports of nowadays Mozambique, Tanzania and Kenya from neighbouring territories, but they extended far inland in regions in the present-day Zambia, Malawi, Uganda, Angola and Kongo. Land routes also connected distant territories in East Africa. Slave voyages forced African people to move to distant lands in the Indian Ocean but also in the Atlantic.
